ABOUT US

The story of Nonna Piazza in Porto

More than a pizzeria, Nonna Piazza is a house built around time, tables and family.

Our story brings together Italian tradition, family roots and a special connection to Porto. Every pizza, every dish and every table we serve carries a journey that began many years before we opened our doors at Praça de Parada Leitão.

THE ORIGINS

A tradition of over 40 years in Italian cuisine

The story of Nonna Piazza began over 40 years ago, far from Portugal. At the age of 18, José Gonçalves emigrated to Switzerland, where he discovered his passion for gastronomy while working in an Italian restaurant.

His enthusiasm was so strong that, even on his days off, he would spend time helping in another place called Nonna. It was there, between the kitchen, the dining room and the oven, that he began to absorb the foundations of Italian cooking and pizza-making.

GROWTH

A family success story in Leça

After around a decade of learning, José returned to Portugal with the desire to open his own business. Together with his brother Gentil, he founded Bonn Leça, a neighbourhood restaurant and pizzeria that grew through hard work, consistency and love for food.

The space gained loyal customers, expanded its dining rooms and became a reference in the area. More than 30 years later, it remains open, keeping alive the family's connection to pizza, Italian cuisine and the art of welcoming people.

From Leça to the heart of Porto

In March 2018, Luís, son of José Gonçalves, brought this new chapter to the heart of Porto. That is how Nonna Piazza was born, at Praça de Parada Leitão, also known as Praça dos Leões.

The name was not chosen by chance. Nonna means grandmother in Italian, evoking affection, tradition and family, while also recalling the restaurant where José took his first steps in Switzerland. Piazza means square, connecting our identity to the place where we welcome guests every day.

THE SPACE

The table, the house and the light

Between stone walls, warm light and the smell of dough in the oven, Nonna took shape in the heart of Porto.
